Die Hybrid Media Publikation beleuchtet aktuelle Entwicklungen dieser Theater-und Tanzszene in der Schweiz mit dem Fokus auf Arbeitsweisen, die Ausbildung sowie die Rezeption durch das Publikum. Das SNF-Forschungsprojekt „DisAbility on Stage“ an der Zürcher Hochschule der Künste in Kooperation mit anderen Hochschulen, Theater-und Tanzkompanien und Festivals untersuchte diese Aspekte im Dialog zwischen Theorie und Praxis sowie zwischen den verschiedenen Sprachregionen der Schweiz. Die Hybrid Media Publication vermittelt die Ergebnisse der Forschung mittels Text-, Video- und Bildmaterial an ein breites Publikum. Eine Verteidigung gegen ihre Verfechter
Seit ihren Anfängen in den 1990er Jahren hat sich “künstlerische Forschung” als ein neues bildungs- und institutionenpolitisches wie auch ästhetisch-kunsttheoretisches Format etabliert. Inzwischen ist sie auf fast alle künstlerischen Felder diffundiert: von der Installationskunst über experimentelle Formate bis zur zeitgenössischen Musik, der Literatur oder Tanz- und Performancekunst. Doch steht sie seit ihrem Beginn – etikettiert unter Labels wie “Kunst und Wissenschaft” oder “Scienceart” und “Artscience”, die beide in einem Atemzug miteinander verbindet – im Wettstreit mit der akademischen Forschung, ohne dass ihr eigener Forschungsbegriff angemessen geklärt wäre. Das Manifest unternimmt den Versuch, Klärung zu schaffen und den Begriff, die Potenziale und Radikalität einer forschenden Kunst gegen diejenigen zu verteidigen, die allzu vorsichtig mit universitären Formaten liebäugeln und sie an wissenschaftliche Prinzipien anschließen wollen. Vielmehr geht es darum, die Eigenständigkeit und besondere Intellektualität ästhetischen Forschens herauszustreichen, ohne Legitimitätszwängen zu genügen und fremde Maßstäbe anzulegen.

Since its beginnings in the 1990s, “artistic research” has become established as a new format in the areas of educational and institutional policy, aesthetics, and art theory. It has now diffused into almost all artistic fields, from installation to experimental formats to contemporary music, literature, dance or performance art. But from its beginnings—under labels like “art and science” or “scienceart” or “artscience” that mention both disciplines in one breath—it has been in competition with academic research, without its own concept of research having been adequately clarified. This manifesto attempts to resolve the problem and to defend the term and the radical potentials of a researching art against those who toy all too carefully with university formats, wishing to ally them with scientific principles. Its aim is to emphasize the autonomy and particular intellectuality of artistic research, without seeking to justify its legitimacy or adopt alien standards.

Law and art are oftentimes perceived as standing in opposition, and even seen in conflicting terms. The first is dismissed as provincial, rigid, and bureaucratic, while the latter is repeatedly characterized as global, flexible, and dynamic. Yet, closer observation and analysis reveal hidden links and layers, and substantial preoccupation by both legal and art practitioners in the visual and in the judicial. It is through the unraveling of spaces, gaps, and lacunae in which both fields of practice and knowledge intersect that this publication sets in motion an exploration of influences and interactions between law and art. Offering a new critical approach and methodology to deal with existing and imagined relations between law and art, this publication analyzes curatorial and artistic projects by revealing overlooked legal dimensions embedded within them. It introduces legal theory and scholarship in relation to visual artworks in order to expand and foster new paths for both judicial and visual activism. Based on the reassessment of artistic and curatorial capabilities and encounters in a time of globalization, it is concerned with broadening our perception of the role of art and legal practitioners with regard to justice.
