In June 2012, RemOs1 was placed at the West Coast of Spitsbergen at a remotely controllable depth between two and twelve meters and connected with the mainland station through steady power and glass fiber lines. After an experimental phase, the observatory was revised and on September 15, 2012, lowered in the coastal waters. Since that date, the art project stores approximately 30 Gigabytes of audio and visual data daily. The series of archival stereometric images printed here (lasting until September 19, 2014) feature black gaps. These gaps occur due to slight shifts in the synchronization of the two cameras with the flash light as much as to mid- and longterm failures in power and data connectivity. Furthermore, faulty communication between the networks of the involved institutions provokes loss of data. These failures point to precarious technical and environmental conditions in which research is conducted. The varying lightness of the images show the swell and the marine snow (smallest organic particles and probaly microplastics in the water) that increases with rough sea and reflects the light of the flash. Also visible are photos that were taken during repair and calibration work in the workshop.

In strongly globalized cities there are fast transformation processes on the move, reinforced by the neo-liberal policies and the resulting economic, social, urban and cultural policy strategies. From a research perspective, a main question is how to capture, describe and interpret such developments taking place at a fast pace.
Researchers and artsts from Hong Kong and Zurich worked together in a small area of Sham Shui Po, one of the poorest and still most traditional Districts of Hong Kong, to investigate its public spaces according to topics of urban transformation and gentrification.

Die Projekte können somit als «Sensorien» verstanden werden, die die kulturellen Konfliktlinien der Region aufspüren, ihnen Ausdruck verleihen und sie damit individuell wie öffentlich verhandelbar machen.

Urban Research and Practice in a Fast-changing Neighborhood
Savamala, ein traditionsreicher, seit den 1950er Jahren jedoch vernachlässigter Stadtteil Belgrads erfährt seit einiger Zeit einen raschen Wandel. Die Untersuchungen des Bureau Savamala von 2013 und 2014 zeigen die Veränderungen Savamalas sowohl in materieller und soziökonomischer Hinsicht als auch in der Wahrnehmung von Bewohnern und Besuchern Savamalas. Auf Basis der Ergebnisse werden die Möglichkeiten einer sanften und die Grenzen einer gesteuerten Aufwertung diskutiert. Gleichzeitig stellen einheimische Architekten, Künstler und Kulturschaffende ihre Projekte vor, die – zum Teil zusammen mit den Anwohnern – dazu beitragen sollen, Savamala auch ohne Gentrifizierung zu erneuern.
