Im Jahr 1929 arbeitete Georges Bataille in Paris mit Michel Leiris, Carl Einstein und Georges-Henri Rivière am Konzept von »Documents«. Es entstand eine Zeitschrift, in der Bilder des Hohen und des Niederen in der Kultur miteinander kollidierten und kommunizierten. Die darin liegende Befragung des Kulturbegriffs war auch ein Anliegen des in Hamburg arbeitenden Aby Warburg. Carl Einstein nahm deshalb Kontakt mit Fritz Saxl und Erwin Panofsky von der Bibliothek Warburg auf, um letztere zu einer Mitarbeit an »Documents« einzuladen. Aus dem vertiefenden Studium dieses Briefwechsels ergibt sich, dass die Begegnung von Batailles »Documents« und Warburgs »Atlas Mnemosyne« innerhalb einer gemeinsamen Ausstellung als eine fast zwingende Konsequenz im Raum stand. Durch den Tod von Aby Warburg am 26. Oktober 1929 zerschlugen sich diese Pläne. Die vorliegende Publikation rekonstruiert die verschollene Ausstellung und erweitert sie um vier auf die Gegenwart bezogene Räume (Theodrom, Kosmodrom, Technodrom, Soziodrom). Darin wird deutlich, dass ein zeitgemäßer Umgang mit globalisierter Kultur an der durch Warburg und Bataille angestoßenen Bild-Strategie eines radikalen Neu-Konstellierens von Fremdem und Eigenem, Primitivem und Avanciertem, Wissen und Unbewusstem – und somit eines Operierens im und am eigenen Auge – nicht vorbeikommt.
